No one likes sharing a bathroom, and those who do say they enjoy it are almost certainly lying. Nonetheless, whether you share your personal bathroom with a brother, sister, wife, husband, or child, there are plenty of ways to make all your lives easier. Before you go remodeling your small bathroom, make sure you review our five ways to make sharing a bathroom easier.
1. Vanity Storage
Shared bathrooms tend to get messy. One occupant leaves their toothbrush out while the other leaves her makeup on the counter. While general laziness results in a dirty countertop, more often than not, lack of storage is at fault. Therefore, when sharing a bathroom, it’s imperative to have plenty of storage.

Start with a bathroom vanity and ignore pedestal sinks. While pedestals do help smaller bathrooms, they are useless when it comes to storage. Under the vanity, make sure each designated area is marked. Your wife keeps her makeup on this side and you keep your razor and brush on this side. If you need more space under your sink, try installing a spice rack or shallow caddies on the back of the doors.

2. Wall Storage
Did I mention that storage was key in sharing a bathroom? Well, items can be placed above the sink as well. All shared bathrooms should include big wall mirrors that act as medicine cabinets as well. While it certainly is tight, it does add extra space for your smaller toiletries like your toothbrush, brush, floss, and other daily necessities. In fact, the American Dental Association says you should store your toothbrush in an upright position if possible and allow the toothbrush to air-dry until used again.

3. Coordinate Schedules
The easiest way to share a bathroom is to never be in the bathroom at the same time. As such, it’s best to coordinate schedules with your bathroom mate. If both shower in the morning, have a designated time for each. The same can be said for brushing your teeth or drying your hair before bed.

While it is not ideal, having designated schedules for the bathroom can greatly relieve the troubles of sharing a bathroom.

4. Frequent Cleanings
No one likes to bathe, go to the bathroom, or work in dirty environment and even the most organized homeowners leave their toothbrush out once in a while. Therefore, all shared bathrooms need frequent cleanings. Whether it’s scrubbing the floor, wiping down the counters, organizing your shampoos or giving your toilet a little TLC, frequent cleanings will not only make sharing a bathroom easier, but more enjoyable as well.

5. No Toiletry Sharing
Finally, bathroom mates should never share their toiletries and other bathroom items. While you may save a few bucks sharing makeup, soap, and shampoo, the overall gamble is not worth it.

Firstly, there’s a potential to spread bacterial or viral infections. San Antonio dermatologist Vivian Bucay, MD, says everyone harbors bacteria on their skin and the bacteria can contaminate cosmetics.
